Assignment 2 – post tutor feedback reflection

I found this assignment very challenging and although the feedback from my tutor was valid, I decided not to re-shoot the assignment. This was partly as I felt that if I followed the feedback I would be trying to shoot someone else’s assignment and in part because I had intended to start again from scratch with a different subject. In the end I did neither partly due to the amount of time I spend re-working assignment four and also because of family commitments. I think what I learned from this assignment is that I struggle with abstract concepts and more … Continue reading Assignment 2 – post tutor feedback reflection

Assignment 5 – Making it up – revised image

Following the feedback from my tutor I chose to re-shoot my submission for assignment five taking on board his suggestion to simplify it. The three changes are removing my father, having only a single photograph on the chest of drawers and having empty hangers in the wardrobe instead of my mother’s clothes. Below are contact sheets of revised session. In addition to the changes outlined above I also experimented with the flash output and focal length. Assignment 5 – Making it up – tutor feedback

My feedback for assignment five can be read here. My conversation with Andrew was very useful and the main point he made in our discussion and in the written feedback about the image be too busy was obvious as soon as he mentioned it. However, I also found the feedback frustrating as it is similar to the feedback I received for assignment three about the need for me to edit my work more rigorously, something that I am obviously not doing well. I spent a lot of time on this assignment developing ideas that I was not happy with and … Continue reading Assignment 5 – Making it up – tutor feedback

Assignment 5 – Making it up – reflection

Although I am pleased with the end result, the process of getting to it was frustrating. Demonstration of technical and visual skills Materials – Depending on the feedback from my tutor, I will print this image and submit it for assessment next month. Techniques As in assignment three, I used an off-camera flash to light the image as the available light in the room was poor. My main objective was to achieve an even soft light with minimal shadows and I feel I have achieved that. Observational skills, visual awareness, design & compositional skills – I had a broad idea … Continue reading Assignment 5 – Making it up – reflection

Assignment 5 – Making it up – process

My starting point for this assignment was to create an image that looked at my memories of my mother following her recent death. In developing this idea I identified three periods that I could photograph, my memories of my mother when I was a child, when I was an adult and when she was in a care home which, as her Alzheimer’s progressed, resulted in our roles changing, she being helpless and infant like and me in effect parenting her when I visited. I initially thought of photographing objects that related to each period but I realised that although they … Continue reading Assignment 5 – Making it up – process

Assignment 5 – Making it up – Image

My initial idea for this assignment was to explore my memories of my mother following her death. After a lot of toing and froing, including developing a completely different narrative, I returned to the my original idea. My final image is different from my initial idea in that it looks at my mother’s death from my father’s perspective rather than mine and the narrative it is trying to explore is the notion of loss rather than memory. Assignment 5 – Making it up – Revised approach

I have decided to stop working on the theme of looking at my memories of my mother as I was not satisfied with how I could combine the images of the objects I had selected to with the pre-existing images I had of my mother which I wanted to use in the background to high-light which period in our relationship the objects were meant to signify. Consequently I have decided to look at producing an image which looks at the current state of politics in the UK at the moment and in particular the Prime Minister and his difficult relationship … Continue reading Assignment 5 – Making it up – Revised approach

Assignment 5 – Making it up – Test shots

I took some very rough and ready test shots to try and gauge what exposure I would need for the three shots I have in mind. The image features above is a test of the final picture that I am trying to create with a washed-out, high-key, look. Things I need to think about Composition Light direction Light modification Focal length Backgound colour Camera position In the image above I did not think too much about compostion but I realise that this will be important. I think the most important element to concentrate on is lighting, combined with the colour … Continue reading Assignment 5 – Making it up – Test shots
