I have been thinking about how to approach this assignment especially after re-reading my diary entries. The main point that came across from them was an unwillingness to reveal too much about myself. I have thought about how I would translate this into an image or series of images and initially thought of going down the route of self-absented portraiture but have decided not to pursue this approach. There are serveral reason for this but the main one is that it feels a bit cliched; the majority of the photographers we have examined in the course material have chosen to portray themselves obliquely, either through taking on a different identity or by absenting themselves from their images and I feel there is almost and expectation to go down this route; to be post-modern about how to approach this assignment. However, I want to pursue the idea of not revealing too much, of holding back, more directly by trying to produce conventional images using shadow, light and shade, screens and reflections to put myself in the picture but at the same time to limit the information available to the viewer.
My plan is to create a set of 3 – 5 images which use different techniques to give the viewer some information about me but hopefully to leave sufficient information out for the resulting images to be ambigous, to not give too much away. By using lighting creatively I aim to choose how much information about myself I want to reveal.
I think this approach will be technically challenging as I am not familiar with using controlled lighting and my last attempt, one of the assignments for Expressing Your Vision, was not at all successful. However, I do think it gives me the opportunity to be creative and to attempt using new techniques which I am keen to try.
